How to Trim Your GelRest

There are dozens of different violin chinrest designs, so it’s impossible to have a GelRest to fit every single one.  We do have the 7 most popular (see the Fit Guide), but if your chinrest is not in that group, don’t worry.  It’s easy to trim the gel to any shape you may need.  Here’s how:

Step 1 - gather a cutting surface and a sharp razor knife
Step 1 – gather a cutting surface and a sharp razor knife.  The snap-off blade knives can be found at any hardware store and are inexpensive.  They are very sharp so be careful!
Install the GelRest securely on the chinrest
Install the GelRest securely on the chinrest and place GelRest side down on the cutting surface.  The dotted line has been added digitally to show the extra gel material that will be trimmed off.
Now, holding the GelRest firmly with one hand (my left since I am right-handed), cut lightly in one smooth motion, stopping as little as possible. This first cut is mainly to cut through the adhesive tape, so don't try to cut all the way through with the first cut. After this first cut, go back and, pressing harder, cut all the way through. Try to cut in one smooth motion, without stopping if possible.
Now, holding the chinrest firmly with one hand (my left since I am right-handed), cut lightly in one smooth motion all the way around, using the edge of the chinrest to guide the knife.  Try stopping in the middle of the cut as little as possible. This first cut is mainly to cut through the adhesive tape, so don’t try to cut all the way through with the first cut. After this first cut, go back and, pressing harder, now cut all the way through. Again, try to cut in one smooth motion, without stopping if possible.
After the previous step, you should have only a little fine cutting to do with scissors. Simply trim the little remaining bits of gel material.
